Glossary - Eden Verandas
- Aluminium
- A metal frequently used in construction known for its strength, light weight, corrosion resistance and reflectivity of both light and heat.
- Awning
- A retractable cover normally fitted to the wall of a house or other building, to provide protection from the sun.
- Building Regulations
- A set of standards and guidelines that ensure the safety, health, and welfare of people in and around buildings. They cover aspects such as structural integrity, fire safety, accessibility, energy efficiency, and ventilation and are enforced by local authorities.
- Cabrio Veranda
- A style of veranda with retractable concertina-style folding roof to enable full weather protection, operated by remote control. It can be equipped with optional vertical blinds or glass doors and panels.
- CAD
- An abbreviation for computer-aided design, the use of computer software to create, modify, analyse and optimise a design.
- Car Port
- A type of veranda to provide weather protection for vehicles, normally taking up less room than a garage.
- Cube Veranda
- A style of veranda featuring contemporary minimalist design and an almost indiscernible slope on the roof, enabling rainwater drainage.
- Garden Canopy

- Glazing
- The process of installing glass in windows, doors, roofs or other openings.
- Laminated Glass
- A type of safety glass that holds together in the event of an impact, preventing breaking and its potential hazards.
- Load Calculation
- An essential process in construction to determine the force or load that a structure must support, such as the weight of the roof or the added potential weight of snow or leaves.
- Metallic Effect
- A shimmering effect created by tiny particles of metal in a paint or other surface finish.
- Garden Room

- Glass Room
- A style of enclosed veranda with glass doors and walls for weather protection, making it more versatile. A stylish alternative to a conservatory.
- Panoramic Veranda
- A style of veranda with a flat louvred roof to enable weather protection controlled by remote control or automatically by the use of a built-in weather sensor. Can be fitted with optional vertical blinds. Can be installed as a free standing structure.
- Planning Permission
- Formal approval from a local authority for proposed developments or alterations to a structure or land.
- Powder Coated
- A process used to apply a durable and high-quality coloured weather proof finish to metals. Often used as an alternative to paint to reduce maintenance.
- RAL
- A colour matching system which defines colours for paints, coatings and plastics. Enables accurate matching and specification of colours anywhere in the world, for any application.
- Retro-Fit
- The process of adding new items ( such as doors to an existing veranda) or features to an existing structure to improve performance, usability or appearance.
- Safety Glass
- See Laminated Glass.
- Satin Finish
- A low-sheen finish between a matte and a gloss finish.
- Survey
- An exercise to determine the suitability of a property or structure for the addition of an additional structure or features.
- UV Protection
- Measures and materials designed to shield against the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. UV radiation can cause skin damage and/or eye problems and also premature fading of hard materials and fabrics.
- Veranda
- A roofed platform which normally has open sides to take advantage of the outdoor space but provides a degree of weather protection. The roof is normally made of glass. It can be located against the wall of a house or other building, or as a standalone structure.
- Vertical Sunshade
- A vertical fabric blind which can be opened, closed or adjusted to provide protection from the sun.
